What this class works with

The third episode of the wave exploration is an invitation to the idea that a wave does not move in order to become another wave: it rises, travels and dissolves, with nowhere to arrive. Rather than asking the body to move in a particular line, allow movement to discover its own pathway, this works beautifully with spinal undulation and circular movements. Parveen returns throughout to the second half of that inquiry, that no wave is ever the same twice, so a repeated sequence can be met freshly instead of mechanically, which is the freedom within repetition. The session closes in Advaita: life as consciousness is already complete, and the sadhana of movement, breath and contemplation is not to create that completeness but to recognise it.

In this class

  • •Opening centering, seated or supine, observing rather than directing
  • •Sound met as another appearance of consciousness, one wave after another, then the breath received the same way
  • •Pranava mantra Om and the Shanti mantra before standing
  • •Standing attunement: rocking forward and back, side to side, then circular movement in both directions
  • •Arm wave with the pelvis tilting posteriorly and anteriorly, the spine rounding and extending segment by segment into ragdoll
  • •Cross dynamic pendulums into the standing wave, then side bend into rotation, dropping into a ragdoll floated from side to front to side
  • •Step out to Goddess with circular sweeps of the floor, into Parshvottanasana on blocks with the hips moving forward and back
  • •Three-legged dog, high plank and the small wave of child, cat and cow, opening into the big wave between plank and downward dog
  • •Warrior One wave, diving into the undercurrent and rising, with a chair supporting the legs, and a kneeling wave taken as improvisation
  • •ragdoll with the hands clasped behind, windshield wipers, hanging bridge with the arms reaching overhead, and Shavasana with the legs resting on a chair
  • •Closing contemplation on Shiva and Shakti, and on carrying the same recognition into showering, cooking and speaking with someone
